LOYA Diamond FAQ

Everything you want to know,
answered with care.

Creating a LOYA diamond is an extraordinary and deeply personal decision. Here, you will find clear answers about your diamond, the hair, fur or ashes you entrust to us, the creation journey, jewellery, MYLOYA, ordering and delivery.
If your question is not answered here, we are always here to guide you personally.

The LOYA Diamond

Are LOYA diamonds real diamonds?

Yes, and perhaps the most meaningful ones in the world. A LOYA diamond is a genuine, laboratory-grown diamond, with the same brilliance, hardness and fire as a natural one. The difference is where it begins: with the hair, fur or ashes of a person or animal you love. Real in every way, yet unlike any other, because no one else could ever create this one.

Is a LOYA diamond the same as a memorial or remembrance diamond?

Yes, and more. A memorial diamond is grown from the carbon of someone who has passed, and we create those with great care. But a LOYA diamond can also celebrate a person or animal still with you, made from their hair or fur. It is a diamond of remembrance and of love that is still here.

What makes a LOYA diamond different from an ordinary lab-grown diamond?

An ordinary lab-grown diamond begins with anonymous carbon and is mass-produced. Yours begins with your loved one. The carbon recovered from their hair, fur, or ashes becomes the irreplaceable heart of your diamond grown in an individual reactor.  Every step, from your Collection Kit to your MYLOYA space, exists for your story alone.

Can I choose the size and shape of my diamond?

Yes, this diamond is yours to imagine. Choose your preferred carat weight and shape. Some shapes are not yet available in every setting, such as a pear-shaped ring. These can be created for you on request, or you may choose a loose diamond and have it set by a jeweller of your choice. If you have something larger or different in mind, book a consultation and we will explore it with you personally.

Will my diamond be exactly as I imagined it?

Very close, and never mass-produced. You choose the shape and carat weight, and we work to the quality standards below, in a laboratory we have chosen with great care.

Diamond growth is a carefully controlled physical process, and some variation can occur. Because yours grows from your own material, small differences in colour, clarity, inclusions and final weight can occur within those standards. These are not flaws. They are the fingerprints of a stone that grew for one story only, and they are recorded in your IGI Certificate. You will also see your diamond take shape through personal updates along the way, so the finished stone is never a stranger when it arrives.

And if your piece ever reaches you and something genuinely does not feel right, tell us. We will look at it with you and find a fitting way forward.

What quality are LOYA diamonds?

Every LOYA diamond is created to our quality standard: colour D–F, clarity VS2 or higher, an Excellent or Ideal cut for Round Shape diamonds, and Very Good or Excellent polish and symmetry for every shape. Your IGI Certificate independently records the final result for your stone.

Should a diamond ever fall outside our standard, you will hear it from us before it is set, and together we will find a fitting way forward.

Is every LOYA diamond really unique?

Completely. Yours is grown for one person or animal, from one source, on its own journey, never alongside another family's diamonds. As it forms, nature leaves quiet fingerprints in its colour, clarity and character, all individually recorded. No two are ever the same, just as no two loves are. Yours is one of one.

Is a LOYA diamond as strong and durable as a mined diamond?

Exactly as strong. A LOYA diamond is pure crystallised carbon, the hardest natural material there is, with the same durability as any earth-mined diamond. It is made to be worn every day, and to be passed down for generations.

Can I create more than one diamond from the same person or animal?

Yes. When one life has touched several hearts, each person can carry their own diamond, all connected by one shared origin. Every diamond is grown individually and can have its own shape, carat weight and setting. With LOYA Family Diamonds, every additional diamond is offered at the Family price: 40% off its diamond price, from €1.077. Each diamond needs the same amount of material: from about 4 grams of hair or fur, or around 60 grams of ashes. Tell us your plans early and we will look at them with you.

What if I am unsure which collection belongs to my story?

Of course, and some loves do not fit neatly into one name. Generally Eternal is for a love being chosen and lived, Legacy for the people who shaped you, and Companion for the animals whose love became part of your life. If your story lives between them, reach out and we will help you find the most fitting path.

Hair, Fur & Ashes

How much hair, fur or ashes do you need?

Less than most people expect. For ashes, around 60 grams is enough to begin. For hair or fur, from about 4 grams is enough: a small lock that fills the container in your Collection Kit roughly halfway. For Family Diamonds, each diamond needs this same amount. Gentle, clear instructions are inside your kit.

If what you have is very little, please contact us before sending anything. We will look at it together and tell you honestly what is possible.

Can I create a diamond from someone or an animal who is still here?

Yes, and it is one of the most joyful choices you can make. A LOYA diamond does not only honour someone missed. Using hair or fur, it can celebrate a partner, a parent, a child, or the dog at your feet, a love that is beautifully present right now.

Does the hair, fur or ashes I send really become part of the diamond?

Yes. Everything you send, following the instructions in your Collection Kit, is purified and becomes part of the growth of your diamond. Your material is never combined with another client's.

Every source carries its own natural amount of carbon. To give your diamond the stable, even growth it deserves, our laboratory may complement it with pure laboratory carbon where this is needed. It is part of creating a diamond of lasting quality, and it never changes what makes yours yours: it begins with them.

Can hair or fur that has been kept for years still be used?

Very often, yes. A baby's first curl, hair kept from a wedding day, or fur saved long after a companion has gone may all still be suitable, as long as there is enough of it. Condition matters more than age, so when in doubt, please contact us and we will gladly help.

What if my material turns out not to be suitable?

It very rarely happens, and if it does, you hear it from us before anything else is done. Every material carries a different amount of usable carbon, and we assess yours with care before anything begins. If it turns out to be unsuitable, we contact you personally, and we look at the options together, including whether other material could be used. Nothing is ever processed without you knowing.

What if I do not have enough ashes, hair or fur?

Please do not worry. If you are concerned there may not be enough, contact us before sending anything. We will look at it together with great care and tell you honestly what is possible.

What happens to the material I send?

All of it becomes part of your diamond. Your Collection Kit shows you exactly how much to send, and everything you entrust to us, following those instructions, is used in its creation. Nothing is set aside or divided. If you would like to keep part of what you hold, simply keep it close at home and send only what your kit asks for.

Do I need permission to send hair, fur or ashes to LOYA?

For hair or fur, no formal permission is needed, though if it comes from someone still with us, we trust it is given with their knowledge and blessing.

For ashes it matters more. Under Dutch law, only the person entitled to receive the ashes may decide what happens to them. When you send us ashes, you confirm that you are that person, or that you have their agreement.

We say this to protect what matters. Where a loved one is grieved by several people, a shared decision is almost always the kinder one, and if more than one person would like to carry a diamond, our Family Diamonds were made for exactly that. If your situation is complicated, please reach out. We have had these conversations before, and we will help you find the right way forward.

Can I use something other than hair, fur or ashes?

Hair, fur and ashes are the materials we work with, because they hold the carbon a diamond needs. If your story begins with something else, contact us before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether it is possible.

The Process

How long does the complete process usually take?

Usually around four to six months, from the moment suitable material is received and payment is complete. We share this as a heartfelt estimate rather than a fixed date. Growth, cutting, grading, setting and certification each move at their own pace, and some things are simply too meaningful to rush.

What happens after I place my order?

Your journey begins right away. Usually within 5–8 business days, your LOYA Collection Kit is on its way to you, beautifully presented, with everything you need to gather and safely return the hair, fur or ashes. The moment it reaches us, we confirm receipt personally, review it with care, and begin preparation once it is suitable. You are never alone in the process.

Will I receive updates during the journey?

Yes, and watching your diamond come to life is part of the wonder. We share milestones through personal updates: the safe arrival of your material, the start of growth, and the moment your diamond is ready to come home. Timing can vary by stage.

How do hair, fur or ashes become a diamond?

It is one of the most remarkable things science can do. Every diamond is carbon at heart, and so are we. We isolate and refine the carbon from the hair, fur or ashes you send, then grow it onto a diamond seed in a controlled environment, layer by layer over months, in a specialist laboratory we have chosen with great care. Slowly, carbon recovered from their material becomes part of the growing diamond.

What does a dedicated growth journey mean?

It means your diamond is never one of many. A reactor is set aside for your creation and holds your diamond only, yours, for the whole of its growth, with its own identification and records. Your material is never combined with another client's, and no other story shares that space. Care and attention go to one story at a time.

What does CVD mean?

CVD stands for Chemical Vapour Deposition, the modern way we grow real diamonds. Inside a controlled chamber, carbon settles onto a tiny diamond seed layer by layer, with temperature, pressure and energy managed with great precision. We chose it because when the source is irreplaceable, only the most careful science is worthy of it.

How does LOYA keep track of my material and diamond?

With complete continuity. When your material arrives it is registered and connected to information unique to your order, and documented handling links every stage, from arrival through growth to your finished diamond. We confirm receipt personally, so you always know it is safe in our care.

We have just said goodbye to our loved one. When can we begin our LOYA journey?

There is no need to rush this. If your story begins with ashes, there is one practical thing to know: in the Netherlands, a crematorium keeps the ashes for at least one month before they can be released to the person entitled to receive them. Many families are not aware of this, and it can feel like an unexpected wait.

If the timing feels uncertain, or you would rather talk it through first, we are here.

What if my diamond does not grow successfully?

Diamond growth is precise work, and despite every care a growth can occasionally fail. If that happens, we tell you straight away and never quietly. Together we will find a suitable alternative. You will never be left without an answer.

Certification & Quality

How is a LOYA diamond certified?

Every finished LOYA diamond is submitted to the International Gemological Institute for independent assessment and grading, and arrives with its own IGI Certificate. The report records the gemological characteristics of your diamond and its laboratory-grown origin.

What do the 4Cs mean?

The 4Cs are the language the diamond world uses to describe a stone, and all four appear on your IGI Certificate.

Cut: how well the diamond has been cut, and how it returns light.
Colour: from colourless (D) to light yellow (Z).
Clarity: the presence of inclusions, the tiny natural marks formed during growth.
Carat: the weight of the diamond.

Every LOYA diamond is created to the same high standard, and your report records the final result for your stone.

Why does independent certification matter?

The story behind your LOYA diamond is deeply personal. Its quality should never be a matter of trust alone. An IGI Certificate is an independent, internationally recognised record of carat weight, colour, clarity, cut, polish and symmetry. You hold the story. IGI confirms the stone.

Can I verify my IGI Certificate myself?

Yes. Your report number is clearly stated in your IGI Certificate and is also laser inscribed on the girdle of your diamond in small letters far too small to see with the eye. This identical number can be looked up directly in IGI's own online database.

Does the certificate mention that my diamond was made from a loved one?

The IGI Certificate records the diamond's gemological qualities, such as cut, colour, clarity and carat, rather than the personal origin of the carbon. That deeply personal story is held and safeguarded through your MYLOYA space.

Jewellery & Design

What jewellery can I choose from?

A considered collection of handcrafted 18K gold rings and pendants, each designed to suit the shape and character of the diamond it holds, as well as the loose diamond itself. Each LOYA setting is crafted to hold one diamond only, your own, and is therefore offered exclusively together with a LOYA diamond. Pendants are supplied without a chain, so you can wear yours on a chain of your choice. With a loose diamond you are able to personally set it at your local jeweller. Every setting, metal and personal touch available for a design is shown on its own page.

Can I order a loose LOYA diamond without jewellery?

Yes. You can choose a loose LOYA diamond and have it set by a jeweller of your choice, or select one of LOYA's rings or pendants. Please note that jewellery created, repaired or altered by another jeweller falls outside LOYA's control and is not covered by LOYA's jewellery workmanship warranty.

Which precious metals are available?

Every LOYA piece is crafted in 18K gold, 75% pure, chosen for its warmth and lasting strength. Selected designs come in yellow gold's timeless glow, white gold's quiet luminosity, or rose gold's soft romance. The options for your piece are shown on its product page.

Can I set my LOYA diamond in a piece I already own?

Often, yes, and it can be a beautiful way to bring two stories together. Whether it is possible depends on the setting, the size of your diamond and the condition of the piece, so we recommend having it assessed by a jeweller first. We are happy to guide you, and you may use a jeweller of your choice. Please note that work carried out by another jeweller falls outside LOYA's control and is not covered by LOYA's jewellery workmanship warranty.

How do I determine my ring size?

Our Size Guide helps you estimate it, and for the truest fit we recommend a professional jeweller measures your finger with a ring sizer. Size shifts with warmth, time of day and band width, so if you are between sizes or planning a surprise, reach out before confirming and we will guide you.

Why does the price change when I select a larger ring size?

Every LOYA ring is made to order in solid 18K gold. Larger ring sizes require more gold, so the final price is adjusted to reflect the additional precious metal used.

What if my ring doesn't fit?

Every LOYA ring is made to order in the size you choose, so please take a moment to measure carefully before ordering. If your ring does not fit once it arrives, please contact us. Where technically possible, we can resize it after an assessment, based on a separate quotation.

Can my jewellery be engraved?

Every LOYA ring and pendant carries your personal MYLOYA code, engraved in the gold.

How do I care for my LOYA jewellery?

Cared for gently, your piece is made to last for generations.

  • Take it off before sport, sleep, swimming and housework.
  • Keep it away from chlorine, perfume, lotion and household chemicals.
  • Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then dry it with a soft cloth.
  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners at home.
  • Store it separately in its LOYA box.
  • Have the setting checked by a jeweller once a year.
What warranty comes with LOYA jewellery?

Alongside your full statutory rights, every piece carries a 24-month workmanship warranty from delivery, covering manufacturing and material defects under normal use. If anything ever falls short, we will repair, replace or offer a fair resolution. It does not cover normal wear, accidental damage or work by another jeweller, and your legal rights always remain unaffected.

What if I lose my diamond or my jewellery?

This is the one thing we cannot recreate, because your diamond began with something irreplaceable. Loss and accidental damage are not covered by the warranty, so we recommend insuring your piece under your home or valuables policy once it arrives.

MYLOYA

What is MYLOYA?

MYLOYA is where your love story lives on. It is the private digital space connected to your diamond, holding the names, dates, photographs, videos and words you choose to keep, whether for a person or a cherished animal. A living memory that grows with every chapter you add.

Is MYLOYA included in the price?

Yes. Every LOYA diamond comes with its personal MYLOYA card and twelve months of MYLOYA, with up to 10 GB for your photographs, videos, voices and words. Your twelve months begin on the day your finished diamond is delivered. Afterwards, you are free to continue for €99 per twelve months. Nothing renews automatically: before your period ends, we will let you know personally what your options are.

How do I access MYLOYA?

With one gentle tap. Your personal MYLOYA card arrives with your finished diamond, and a single touch to a compatible smartphone opens your private space instantly. A compatible device and internet connection are needed, and full instructions come with your order.

Which devices does MYLOYA work with?

Your MYLOYA card opens with a gentle tap on a compatible smartphone, and your space works through your browser, so there is no app to install. Most modern iPhone and Android devices are compatible, and full instructions arrive with your order.

Can I add memories later?

Yes, MYLOYA is made to grow with you. While your membership is active, return whenever you wish to add new photographs, videos, words and meaningful dates, within your 10 GB of storage. We do recommend keeping your own copies of your most precious files as well.

Can I share MYLOYA with family and friends?

Yes. Some memories can be held close, others are meant to bring people together. Keep your space for you or share it with selected loved ones. As the person sharing, you are responsible for having permission to share content about other living people.

Is MYLOYA private and secure?

Your space is private unless you choose to share it. We protect it with care, use your memories only to provide MYLOYA, and never sell your personal data.

How long will MYLOYA last, and can I pass it on?

Your MYLOYA space stays open for as long as your membership is active: the first twelve months come with your diamond, and you may continue year by year if you wish. If you choose not to continue, your space becomes inactive, but your memories are kept for another twelve months, so you can return, reactivate or request a copy of everything you added. You can also name a Legacy Contact: someone who, after you are gone, may be given access so the story can be carried forward. The details are set out in our MYLOYA Terms.

What if I lose my MYLOYA card?

Please do not worry, your memories remain safely stored. If your card is lost or damaged, contact us and we will help you arrange a replacement so you can reconnect to your space.

Ordering & Payment

What is included in the price?

Each LOYA creation includes your personal MYLOYA card with twelve months of MYLOYA, signature keepsake packaging, and an official IGI Certificate, delivered with shipping within the Netherlands. Prices reflect Dutch VAT (21%). Fine jewellery settings and bespoke design options are thoughtfully chosen separately to complete your piece.

Do I pay everything at once?

Your diamond is paid in full when you order. It is what allows us to begin: from that moment, your Collection Kit is on its way to you and reactor time is reserved for your creation alone.

Which payment methods can I use?

To ensure a seamless checkout experience, we accept iDEAL and credit card (Visa, Mastercard and American Express), securely processed by Mollie. All transactions are fully encrypted, and we never store your payment details.

Can I cancel or return my order?

Yes, as long as we have not yet received your Collection Kit. Until that moment you can cancel your order. We only deduct reasonable costs that were disclosed in advance and have actually been incurred, such as the Collection Kit already sent and its shipping costs. On request, we provide a breakdown of these costs.

From the moment we receive your Collection Kit, your order can no longer be changed or cancelled, even if carbon extraction or diamond growth has not yet started. Because every LOYA diamond is made to order from your personal material, it falls outside the statutory 14-day right of withdrawal. Your statutory rights in the event of a defect or non-conformity always remain unaffected.

What if I change my mind after ordering?

We understand completely, this is a decision of the heart. Please contact us as soon as possible. Until we have received your Collection Kit, you can still change or cancel your order; we only deduct reasonable costs that were disclosed in advance and have actually been incurred. Once your Collection Kit has reached us, your order can no longer be changed or cancelled.

Can I speak with LOYA before deciding?

We would be honoured to. You are welcome to request a personal consultation before ordering, especially when material is limited, several loved ones are involved, or you would like to explore a bespoke design. It is simply gentle guidance, with no obligation until you confirm an order.

How do Family Diamonds work?

Family Diamonds are two or more LOYA diamonds created from the same hair, fur or ashes. Each diamond can have its own shape, carat weight and jewellery. Every additional diamond receives the Family price: 40% off its diamond price, from €1.077 instead of €1.795. Add them to your cart together and the Family price appears automatically.

Why is a Family Diamond offered at a special price?

Family Diamonds begin with one shared source of love and are created as one order. Your material is received, registered and prepared once, and every diamond in your order grows in the same reactor, reserved for your order alone and never shared with another family. That shared journey is what allows us to offer each additional diamond at the Family price. The meaning, care and quality of every diamond remain exactly the same.

Is my order handled discreetly?

Always. Your story, your material and your details stay between you and our team, and are only shared with the partners needed to create and deliver your diamond.

Why do prices sometimes change?

Before an order is confirmed, prices can move a little with precious-metal costs and available specifications. Once confirmed, your price holds, unless you request a change or in the rare case of an obvious pricing error we may correct before production. No surprises, ever.

In which languages can I reach your team?

Our team is glad to help you in Dutch and English. Whatever your question, and however personal, you are always welcome to reach out.

Shipping & Delivery

How do I safely send something so precious to you?

Your Collection Kit is designed exactly for this, with a secure container, clear instructions and a prepaid return label, so sending it to us is made easy for you. Gently follow the steps written on the card inside the LOYA Collection Kit. The moment it reaches us, we confirm personally that it has arrived safely in our care.

How is shipping handled?

Shipping is complimentary, in both directions. Your Collection Kit comes to you with a prepaid return label for the journey back, and your finished LOYA diamond is sent to you with a tracked service, included in your price. We will let you know when your delivery is on its way.

Does LOYA deliver outside the Netherlands?

For now, we deliver within the Netherlands, and prices are shown in euros including Dutch VAT. If you are outside the Netherlands, please do reach out. We would love to hear your story and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

What should I do if my delivery arrives damaged or incorrect?

In the rare event your delivery arrives damaged or not as it should be, please keep the packaging, take a few photographs and let us know within 10 days of receipt at info@loyadiamonds.com. We will look at it with you and make it right. Your statutory rights always remain unaffected.
